My Heart’s Work: Connecting The Promise School, MUSC Children's Health, and the Magic of Literacy!
Hi Promise School Family,
Helping kids and families has always been a priority at The Promise School!
Recently, there was an opportunity to be featured in a spotlight by MUSC Children's Health. It was a chance to talk about why their mission resonates so deeply with us. Our family has seen firsthand the care provided, especially during a deeply challenging time with our cherished son Leo and his rare medical condition. His journey gave us a new perspective on the strength and resilience of children.
Being on the MUSC Children's Health Advisory Board feels like a natural extension of the work at The Promise School. Both places ensure children have the support they need to thrive. Whether it's the medical care at the hospital or our specialized learning environment offered for students with language-based learning differences like dyslexia, the focus is always on the children.
The Promise School and its students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, brings attention to something that is important every day: the power of literacy to change lives. Witnessing this happening in the classrooms is important. The students served have amazing gifts, and the mission is to help them grow and succeed. Literacy is a big part of that.
When a child who's been struggling with reading finally "gets it," when they discover the joy of books and stories, it's truly transformative. It opens up a whole new world of learning and possibilities. At our school, we use approaches like the Orton-Gillingham method, which is the standard for supporting students with dyslexia. It helps "rewire the brain" so these bright kids can unlock their full potential and find that confidence and love of learning.
It's incredible to witness these students blossoming, not just academically but also socially and emotionally. Literacy isn't just about reading words; it's about understanding the world, connecting with others, and building a foundation for a successful future.
Whether advancements in rare disease research at MUSC Children's Health or breakthroughs happening in our classrooms as students unlock the power of literacy, it's all about helping children achieve their full potential. It's so important to be part of a community dedicated to supporting kids in so many ways. Please read more here!
Thanks for being part of this journey with us!
Warmly,
Brandie D'Orazio
